Intro: My balcony was tiny, and for a long time I treated it like an outdoor storage shelf — a chair I never sat in and pots I forgot to water. Then I cleared it properly, added plants that suited the light it actually gets, and it became my favourite corner of the flat. These five ideas work even on the smallest balcony.
1. Grow up, not out. Wall planters, hanging pots and a small trellis give you greenery without eating the floor space you need to stand and sit.
2. Pick plants for your light, not for photos. A sunny balcony and a shaded balcony need completely different plants. Ask what survives in your direction before buying anything pretty.
3. Keep one comfortable seat. One good chair you actually sit in beats two chairs that only look nice. Add a small cushion and a throw for cooler evenings.
4. Add light for the evening. A string of warm fairy lights makes a tiny balcony feel magical after sunset, and costs almost nothing to run.
5. Water in a routine, not in a panic. A small watering can by the door and a fixed morning or evening habit keep plants alive far better than occasional big watering sessions.
Mistake to avoid: Filling the balcony in one shopping trip. Plants need time to settle, and you need time to learn what grows there. Start with three or four plants, then add more once those are thriving.
Closing: A small balcony does not need to be big to feel like an escape. A few healthy plants, a comfortable seat, and warm evening light are enough to turn it into the greenest corner of your home.
